1 step forward, 2 steps back
did not have a good round of golf today at Northern Dunes with Blaine and Dale. I may have drank too much beer but even before that I was terrible. My irons and my hybrid are back in the doghouse. I got the sh*nks on hole 3 and they basically didn't go away. Live and learn! We had a good time but I definitely didn't play very well. They gave us a sleeve of 3 balls each but i bet we each lost that in the first 4 holes :)

16 holes and a birdie...
Went to the Mix 106 tour tonight at Scenic City with a couple of people from work. I played very well if i may say so. I drove as well as I have all year. I have never shot as well with my hybrid. I shot consistently well with my irons. I was not a great chipper or a putter, but i did okay for me. I even got a birdie on a par 4. It was the 15th hole, where I got my first ever par for the record. I blasted off the tee, was about 100 yards from the pin. Got my 9 iron out and shot it less than 4 feet from the pin. I tapped it in. No other pars...we didn't keep score but i don't think i had any other holes more than 6, except maybe #6 where i chipped it back and forth. A good effort all in all and i had a great time. good conversation too!

Like holding a dead bird

before i go any further...thank you Alice Cooper. I was reading his book that my brother got me for my birthday and he advised when hitting the irons to hold the club with your right hand like you were holding a bird (when i told this to dad i said "dead bird" hence the title). i tried it today and i'll be damned i hit better with the irons. we did 10 holes in 2 hours, so Jane, if you're reading this, technically i could change the twins' diapers and feed them, play 10 holes, and be back in time for the next feeding. i hit a 60 over 10 holes which wasn't so bad...works out to a 108 over 18 which is pretty good if you think about it. mostly 5s and a couple of 9s. dad played pretty good (got a par on a par 5) but did a lot of three putts. my drives were a little more all over the place than in the past, but my iron play (which a couple of exceptions) was much, much better. i used my driver, my 5 iron and my pitching wedge, basically the whole game. my putting was okay. my pitching wedge and my 5 iron were my best clubs. i consistently hit it good with the little irons...didn't have to do a quarter swing and pray that it didn't go through the green into the bush. didn't hit one sandtrap all day. took dad out for father's day and had a lot of fun

i hope golf genes come from the mother's side
regular followers of my blog may notice that the posts have gone down recently...with good reason! on may 3rd my wife gave birth to twins - Sophie and Liam.

i went out golfing with my father in law to Northern Dunes in Hepworth yesterday. he pounded me. i had forgotten what a difficult course it was...we did get all 18 in not like last year with Keith there was lots of bush and the greens were very big. i did feel rusty but i limited my terrible shots. my driver was my best club, then probably chipping and putting. my irons were terrible..my short irons were bad and my long irons were worse. i bet i hit better with my hybrid than i did my 5 iron and my hybrid wasn't great. there were a bunch of long par 4s which were made a lot longer since i couldn't hit it more than 100 yards with an iron.....grr. we had fun though. i got a par on #6 i think. in any case we both had a great time...thanks a lot Dale!

I lost my cool and I got a par
This morning me, Blaine and Dale went to Pinewoods Golf in Sauble Beach. They made some changes v. last year. Last year the 7th hole and 8th hole were both par 3s. This year they moved the 7th hole way back, turning it into a par 5 and the 8th way up, turning it into a par 4, lengthening the course by quite a bit. It was a lot of fun. In poker there's a term called tilt. I don't know if there's a label for it in golf, but as everyone who's ever golfed knows, it can be very frustrating. i lost my cool. i hit about 3/5 shots with my 5-iron (normally my most reliable club) about 10 feet on the 2 par 5's. i ended up throwing a ball into the water. i joked that it was cheaper to throw that than to throw a club. :) it was kinda ironic because everytime i go out, as anyone who has ever played with me can attest to, i preach things like "you shouldn't pay money to get mad", and i never swear. i swore today. on the last hole, it was a par 4, i hit a tree on the left hand side, then hit a beautiful 6-iron shot to put it about 30 or 40 feet from the pin. i two putted and got my par. so it ended well. we shot from the blue tees which added about 270 yards over 9 holes.
my drives were more erratic than they have been all year but they were still pretty good. my long irons were inconsistent. my short game was erratic. my putter was probably my best club (or my 6 iron). i hit some good shots, i hit some terrible shots. i consistently hit better from 40 yards and in than i had done all year, but it was my worst game by far with my 5 iron. we all had a good time...i had my first beer of the season on the course, but only one and that's when all my troubles began so i'm not back on the "beer wagon" when golfing.

It was a good night of golf
me and Chrystelle made the trek out to Whispering Hills tonight and had a real good time. We got there late (about 6 pm) and did the back 9. I hit some good shots, I hit some bad shots. I was much better with my driver and my long irons than i was with close shots. First hole Chrystelle hit it off the tee and got about 20 feet from the pin...i thought she was hustling me :) Second hole you have to hit it down a hill and over the water. First shot, right in the water, there goes my streak of not losing a ball. I did okay after that. On 13 you shoot down a hill, then over a moat and then up a big hill. My chipping/putting was terrible but I was on the "green side" of the moat and mostly up the hill after 3 shots which is about all you can ask for. I hit some real good shots off the tee but got tired I think. My best shot was with my 6 iron on 16. second shot, 150 yards or so. put it about 3 feet off the green. it felt real good. We got some good news from London as well so all in all it was a good day. No pars, but some close calls. i am getting a little more consistent so hopefully that will bode well come August :) There was also a club cleaner which we went to after our 9 holes so it will be like new clubs. I was going to go golfing with Dad and Dale this weekend but word is snow on Saturday(!) so we'll have to see.

I'm pumped up! I would like to get to some of the courses I didn't get to last year - Ainsdale, Bucks Crossing, Homestead. Homestead probably won't happen because it's on my anniversary, but I think that Buck's Crossing would probably work because me and Dale could go and Jane could go visit the inlaws. Realistically, maybe Sauble for my birthday, Bucks Crossing in July, maybe Chippewa in August and Ainsdale or Scenic in September and that may be my golf for the year :) Parenthood is going to rock...can't even tell you how excited I am. Me and Chrystelle (and maybe Blaine) are going to Whispering Hills on Wednesday...do not click the link it may be the worst website ever.
