Nevada Bob's

went to the mall last night with the family and the Nevada Bob's Golf at Sportcheck opened up. They even had a net to hit the balls into. Didn't see anything I really liked or any great deals but it was nice to have somewhere in town i can go for golf stuff

one last round for the season

So after a month of parenting, working a second job and just enjoying life, i finally was able to do 9 holes today after work. Me, Blaine and Pam went to Scenic City (for the first time in a while as i had that pass). The golf wasn't great, my wrist is killing me, but it was a lot of fun. I was too passive with the irons...EVERYTHING was short...putts...irons...chips...something to keep in mind next year...i think i only had one chance for a par (which i missed). it was fun...course was in decent shape but some holes were really wet and some were really dry so it was hard to get a read for the greens...like i needed an excuse :) this is probably it for 2010 unless i win the million (please please please)

i think i had a good year even with having two young babies. my lack of golf through the month of august was solely because i decided to keep my second job as opposed to anything that the kids or jane did or didn't do.

16 with Dale and Dad

Me, Dale and Dad went to Northern Dunes yesterday for a 7;32 tipoff time. I was terrible off the tee, which made for a lon day. My shots from 50 yards and in (including chipping) were the weakest part of my game. My 5 iron was good, my hybrid, 6 and 7 were decent. Rest not good. We had a lot of laughs...i think that may be my last trip to Northern Dunes this year...it's a tough course...i said partway through to Dad that I miss Scenic :)

another 9 at northern dunes

Played 9 more at Northern Dunes today with Roland. Golf was so-so, had some good conversation. I actually played pretty well. i got into some trouble with my chipping and my putting was bad, but all in all i played pretty good. consistently good with my driver and i gave my hybrid a chance. i had quite a few chances for pars...all of which i missed :) Hopefully going back on Friday with Dale and Dad

Did 9 with Dana and Dad

i got to use my free 18 hole pass tonight with Dad and Dana...we did 9 after work. they can't use them very often because the guy didn't know enough to give it back to me :) we walked and it was hot...dad played really well....he hit a lot of good iron shots that left him putting instead of short chipping...beat me by 10 strokes over 9 holes. dana hit some good ones, but needs shorter clubs! she was often an inch high on the ball. i hit some okay tee shots and some okay long irons...even hit some good ones with the hybrid (in all fairness, i gave the hybrid more use than i have in a long time)...my short game was *awful*. 3 times i overshot the green from within 100 yards...on the first hole i took 3 shots to get out of the bunker...there were lots of "too short" chips. all in all i think we all had a good time...i'm going to talk to Dale about golfing this weekend (Sunday maybe) and Dad said he would come with me and Dale next Friday. The course was in great shape, I just didn't play particularly well...and like i said dad played so well that it made it seem like i played even worse :) i didn't have any terrible holes (except the first but that's expected), and except for the short game there weren't too many bad shots...i just didn't have any great ones. i will say, despite carrying my bag for the first time in years, it didn't seem as long as it has some other times...must be getting used to it :)

I actually won something...am I semi-professional now?

Went out and played a best ball tournament for the Knights of Columbus with Chrystelle, Brüno and his wife Kathy at Northern Dunes and we had a blast. The golf was very slow we did 18 holes in 5 hours. the dinner afterwards was good. I golfed okay. Same as always...did good off the tee...inconsistent with my irons. In my head I hit the 6 iron about 20-40 yards further than i actually do :) I putted decently, but with best ball it's hard to get a rhythm i find. But after dinner I was the champ. I won a free month's worth of golf at Northern Dunes, which i'm sure my wife with 3 month old kids will think is a great thing.

Note the spelling

Ironically before dinner I was thinking "I've played Northern Dunes enough for this year, this will probably be the last time I play". I also won three other random draws (golf club covers, golf balls and garden shears that I gave to Chrystelle since she won nothing). If my numbers were going to come up for the 649 it was last night. :) We played so badly that I'm amazed that I have ever been able to get a birdie or a par :) 14th hole was the "long drive" hole and I thought I did pretty good when i blasted it...past the marker...turns out it was the ladies marker and the men's was at least 40 or 50 yards past where mine ended up. good times...not sure if I'd do it again because of the best ball. think there will be more updates before august 16th :)

I'm golfing in Kincardine on Friday with Jane's dad, uncle and Aunt. I'm sure Jane will be ready to kill me by August 16th...i figure once a weekend I will go with either Jane's dad, my own dad or whatever in the morning for 9 and I'll pay half.

my sister has taken up golf as well

my sister has never golfed before but is going to Whistle Bear (where they had the 2005 Canadian Open) next week because she works for RIM and that is where they are doing their annual golf thing next week. So earlier in the year I bought her a used set of left golf clubs (for $10) and this week we went out twice to the driving range at Scenic City. This is what she looked like after the first day

the second time she wore a glove. she was pretty darn good! i told her just to try and get contact with the ball and we were aiming at the 100 sign. she consistently hit the ball. she had lots of questions, which was great...she wanted to know what the "little circle thing" was (gets balls out of the water). she was afraid we'd hit the lady that was collecting golf balls (i told her there's a cage on her so that's who we aim for). we had a good time. we may go out on sunday as well

1 step forward, 2 steps back

did not have a good round of golf today at Northern Dunes with Blaine and Dale. I may have drank too much beer but even before that I was terrible. My irons and my hybrid are back in the doghouse. I got the sh*nks on hole 3 and they basically didn't go away. Live and learn! We had a good time but I definitely didn't play very well. They gave us a sleeve of 3 balls each but i bet we each lost that in the first 4 holes :)

16 holes and a birdie...

Went to the Mix 106 tour tonight at Scenic City with a couple of people from work. I played very well if i may say so. I drove as well as I have all year. I have never shot as well with my hybrid. I shot consistently well with my irons. I was not a great chipper or a putter, but i did okay for me. I even got a birdie on a par 4. It was the 15th hole, where I got my first ever par for the record. I blasted off the tee, was about 100 yards from the pin. Got my 9 iron out and shot it less than 4 feet from the pin. I tapped it in. No other pars...we didn't keep score but i don't think i had any other holes more than 6, except maybe #6 where i chipped it back and forth. A good effort all in all and i had a great time. good conversation too!

Like holding a dead bird

before i go any further...thank you Alice Cooper. I was reading his book that my brother got me for my birthday and he advised when hitting the irons to hold the club with your right hand like you were holding a bird (when i told this to dad i said "dead bird" hence the title). i tried it today and i'll be damned i hit better with the irons. we did 10 holes in 2 hours, so Jane, if you're reading this, technically i could change the twins' diapers and feed them, play 10 holes, and be back in time for the next feeding. i hit a 60 over 10 holes which wasn't so bad...works out to a 108 over 18 which is pretty good if you think about it. mostly 5s and a couple of 9s. dad played pretty good (got a par on a par 5) but did a lot of three putts. my drives were a little more all over the place than in the past, but my iron play (which a couple of exceptions) was much, much better. i used my driver, my 5 iron and my pitching wedge, basically the whole game. my putting was okay. my pitching wedge and my 5 iron were my best clubs. i consistently hit it good with the little irons...didn't have to do a quarter swing and pray that it didn't go through the green into the bush. didn't hit one sandtrap all day. took dad out for father's day and had a lot of fun

i hope golf genes come from the mother's side

regular followers of my blog may notice that the posts have gone down recently...with good reason! on may 3rd my wife gave birth to twins - Sophie and Liam.

i went out golfing with my father in law to Northern Dunes in Hepworth yesterday. he pounded me. i had forgotten what a difficult course it was...we did get all 18 in not like last year with Keith there was lots of bush and the greens were very big. i did feel rusty but i limited my terrible shots. my driver was my best club, then probably chipping and putting. my irons were terrible..my short irons were bad and my long irons were worse. i bet i hit better with my hybrid than i did my 5 iron and my hybrid wasn't great. there were a bunch of long par 4s which were made a lot longer since i couldn't hit it more than 100 yards with an iron.....grr. we had fun though. i got a par on #6 i think. in any case we both had a great time...thanks a lot Dale!

p.s. the northerndunes.com website is much improved! check it out!

I lost my cool and I got a par

This morning me, Blaine and Dale went to Pinewoods Golf in Sauble Beach. They made some changes v. last year. Last year the 7th hole and 8th hole were both par 3s. This year they moved the 7th hole way back, turning it into a par 5 and the 8th way up, turning it into a par 4, lengthening the course by quite a bit. It was a lot of fun. In poker there's a term called tilt. I don't know if there's a label for it in golf, but as everyone who's ever golfed knows, it can be very frustrating. i lost my cool. i hit about 3/5 shots with my 5-iron (normally my most reliable club) about 10 feet on the 2 par 5's. i ended up throwing a ball into the water. i joked that it was cheaper to throw that than to throw a club. :) it was kinda ironic because everytime i go out, as anyone who has ever played with me can attest to, i preach things like "you shouldn't pay money to get mad", and i never swear. i swore today. on the last hole, it was a par 4, i hit a tree on the left hand side, then hit a beautiful 6-iron shot to put it about 30 or 40 feet from the pin. i two putted and got my par. so it ended well. we shot from the blue tees which added about 270 yards over 9 holes.

my drives were more erratic than they have been all year but they were still pretty good. my long irons were inconsistent. my short game was erratic. my putter was probably my best club (or my 6 iron). i hit some good shots, i hit some terrible shots. i consistently hit better from 40 yards and in than i had done all year, but it was my worst game by far with my 5 iron. we all had a good time...i had my first beer of the season on the course, but only one and that's when all my troubles began so i'm not back on the "beer wagon" when golfing.

It was a good night of golf

me and Chrystelle made the trek out to Whispering Hills tonight and had a real good time. We got there late (about 6 pm) and did the back 9. I hit some good shots, I hit some bad shots. I was much better with my driver and my long irons than i was with close shots. First hole Chrystelle hit it off the tee and got about 20 feet from the pin...i thought she was hustling me :) Second hole you have to hit it down a hill and over the water. First shot, right in the water, there goes my streak of not losing a ball. I did okay after that. On 13 you shoot down a hill, then over a moat and then up a big hill. My chipping/putting was terrible but I was on the "green side" of the moat and mostly up the hill after 3 shots which is about all you can ask for. I hit some real good shots off the tee but got tired I think. My best shot was with my 6 iron on 16. second shot, 150 yards or so. put it about 3 feet off the green. it felt real good. We got some good news from London as well so all in all it was a good day. No pars, but some close calls. i am getting a little more consistent so hopefully that will bode well come August :) There was also a club cleaner which we went to after our 9 holes so it will be like new clubs. I was going to go golfing with Dad and Dale this weekend but word is snow on Saturday(!) so we'll have to see.

2010 Bull Golf Tour!

2010 Bull Golf Tour is here!

I don't know how much I'm going to get out (with twins coming) but here is the list for the year regardless...we all had a great time last year. It's Wednesdays and it's $9.45

  • May 5 - Listowel Golf Club
  • May 12 - Pike Lake, Mount Forest
  • May 19 - Seaforth Golf
  • May 26 - Woodlands, Clinton
  • June 2 - Scenic City, Owen Sound
  • June 9 - Sauble Golf and Country Club
  • June 16 - Pike Lake, Mount Forest
  • June 23 - Walkerton Golf
  • June 30 - Homestead Golf, Durham
  • July 7 - Pinewoods Golf, Sauble Beach
  • July 14 - Northern Dunes, Hepworth
  • July 21 - Bucks Crossing, Hanover
  • July 28 - Listowel Golf Club
  • August 4 - Chippewa Golf, Southampton
  • August 11 - South Port, Port Elgin
  • August 18 - Bluewater Golf, Bayfield
  • August 25 - Wingham Golf
  • September 1 - South Port, Port Elgin
  • September 8 - Ainsdale Golf, Kincardine
  • September 15 - Chippewa Golf, Southampton
  • September 22 - Scenic City, Owen Sound

I'm pumped up! I would like to get to some of the courses I didn't get to last year - Ainsdale, Bucks Crossing, Homestead. Homestead probably won't happen because it's on my anniversary, but I think that Buck's Crossing would probably work because me and Dale could go and Jane could go visit the inlaws. Realistically, maybe Sauble for my birthday, Bucks Crossing in July, maybe Chippewa in August and Ainsdale or Scenic in September and that may be my golf for the year :) Parenthood is going to rock...can't even tell you how excited I am. Me and Chrystelle (and maybe Blaine) are going to Whispering Hills on Wednesday...do not click the link it may be the worst website ever.

golf in march!!!!

What a great beginning to the golf season! Me and Brüno went and did 9 holes at Scenic City today. We golfed in March! I can't believe it. This will be something to look back next year when we still have 6 inches of snow :) Chrystelle was going to come with us and we were going to go to Sauble but Chrystelle called in sick to work today and Scenic was closer so we went.

My best club was my driver by a mile. I hit it consistently good off the tee. Didn't even lose one ball, which has to be some kind of record, and my slice apparently has disappeared. Dad told me I with practice I would get it back :) My irons got better as i got warmed up, and my short game was TERRIBLE. TERRIBLE! My putting was decent. For the most part I got it within 5 feet of the hole on the first putt which is all you can hope for. I didn't even get mad. I only used the hybrid twice and the second hit wasn't half bad. my 9 iron and pitching wedge were terrible. my 5 iron, like i said, got better as the round went on.

i didn't even have one beer which i'm going to try to avoid this summer during golf. my buddy, Aaron, said that if i really want to get better i have to take it serious, and i am. i also want to shoot 100 one time this year. i worked it out and to shoot 100 you have to get a 5 on every hole (par 3s, 4s, and 5s) and then you can go over 5 10 times out of 18 and still get 100. that makes 100 sound more reasonable. something to shoot for (ha!) it was about 17 or 18 degrees and sunny...absolutely gorgeous. i may get out on Friday...i could've done 18 tonight but Brüno was getting tired, and I'll likely be sore anyways...

driving range

My good friend Clayton came into town with his wife and year-old daughter and we went up to Scenic and I dusted off my clubs and we went to the driving range. i took my 9 iron and my hybrid and i did okay with my 9 iron and was passable with the hybrid. i am going to try and use it every time out. I slowed down and I did okay. We will see what happens. It is going to rain/snow this weekend so I'm glad i made a point to get out.

Early start in Grey-Bruce

The golf season is officially under way in Grey-Bruce.

Scenic City Golf Course just east of Owen Sound opened in the afternoon of March 15 and Sauble Golf and Country Club near Sauble Beach opened today (March 16).

Both courses are offering unlimited play for $20 per person.

Scenic City's opening is believed to be a record for the area, eclipsing by one day the record set by the same club last year.

Both clubs say they will stay open as long as weather permits.

Golf Town in London

We headed down to London (again) today and I stopped in at golf town to look at some Cobra irons that I had did a little research online...i was looking to get a 3-iron with the set and that was one of the affordable ones that i could find that had one. i took about 6 swings, hit 2 decent ones, and the guy basically told me to suck it up and learn how to hit the hybrid as it would help me in the long run...we'll see how it goes

Christmas DVDs

I got two golf DVDs for Christmas from my wife's Aunt. She's a grade school teacher so she was happy to get the scissors out ;)

good looking guy on the cover ;) i was talking to my buddy Aaron today and he mentioned that for 3 years he was in the 120s, then one year in the 100s and then last year he shot an 80 so there's hope for me...he says no beer at all when he's playing...maybe that's something i'll take up. he lives in Saskatchewan and they have an indoor dome that he practices at in the winter which is awesome...
